Assignments
Independent Study students receive a course study guide and all materials necessary for submitting assignments to the Independent Study Program Office. As assignments are completed, the student may submit them by mail, in the envelope provided, or in person to 10 Funkhouser Building on the UK campus. Then, the approriate faculty member grades the work and returns it, with written comments to the student.
The Independent Study Program will pay first-class postage on all assignments returned to the student. A $30 fee is required for students requesting Air Mail service.
Postage on assignments mailed by the student is the responsibility of the student. Materials sent with insufficient postage may be returned by the postal service.
Electronic Options
E-Mail Lessons: Students that register for an Independent Study course will receive a course study guide. Many of our instructors allow students to submit lessons via e-mail rather than using the U.S. Postal Service. If the option is available, instructions are included in the individual study guides. These lessons are submitted to our e-mail address as well as the instructor's. Once graded, lessons are returned by the instructor to our office as well as to the student.
Web Option: Several correspondence courses are being offered On-Line. All of the work can be completed on-line with the exception of the final exam and any midterm. Students choosing this option will need to use their own computers to read and complete lessons electronically.
For information on these options, contact: dgevan1@uky.edu
Textbooks
The study guide for each course lists the required text(s), author, publisher, and date of publication. You may choose one of the following methods to secure the proper textbooks for your Independent Study course:
- Request that text(s) be sent c.o.d. by Wildcat Textbooks or Kennedy Book Store. This will ensure that your book(s) will be shipped immediately when available.
- Order your text(s) by phone with MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express. The bookstores listed on the textbook order form will ship books promptly once credit card number and expiration date have been furnished to them.
- Wait until you receive your study guide and purchase the text(s) from any bookstore in your area.
- Request a price quotation, which will include postage and handling charges. To do this, mail the textbook order form to one of the bookstores listed on the form. The price of the textbooks is set by the publishers and is subject to change without notice.
Books may be ordered new or used and are sent as they become available. When a used book is requested but is out of stock, a new book will be shipped and you will be billed for the additional cost.
Final Examinations
Students are to use the examination request form provided with each study guide. Testing guidelines are as follows:
- All Kentucky college-level students must use one of the approved testing centers for final examinations. These centers generally do not charge for exams.
- Students taking their final exam on the UK campus should report to the Independent Study Program Office, 10 Funkhouser Building, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Out-of-state college-level students must take their final examination under the supervision of a recognized testing service or a college administrator of an accredited institution. Once the exam site has been approved, the test materials will be sent to the testing center chosen by the student.
- Students in the military may take final examinations for Independent Study courses under the supervision of the Base Education Officer or someone designated by him. They also may use an approved college or university testing center.
- High School students enrolled in college level courses must follow the same procedures as college students.
Honor System
All work is expected to be the result of the student's own efforts unless properly acknowledged to be the work of someone else. Violation of the honor system policy will result in a failing grade being issued for the course, forfeiture of all tuition and fees, and a denial of further services by the Independent Study Program at the University of Kentucky.
Grading System
When students are enrolled in Independent Study courses, their records are kept in the Independent Study Program Office. The records include date of enrollment, date each assignment is received, the date assignments are returned to the student and the grade recorded.
Unless noted otherwise in the study guide, grades are assigned as follows:
A = Exceptional (4.0 grade points)
B = Good (3.0 grade points)
C = Satisfactory (2.0 grade points)
D = Unsatisfactory (1.0 grade point)
E = Failure (no grade points awarded)
W = Withdrawal
The "W" grade indicates the student did not complete the course in the required time limit or voluntarily withdrew from the course. No entry is made on a UK student's permanent record if withdrawal takes place during the first three months of enrollment, provided the student has submitted no assignments.
Graduation Deadlines
Graduating seniors are responsible for making certain that all course work, written assignments and examinations have been completed in time to meet the deadlines of the institution awarding the diploma. A minimum of three weeks should be allowed for final examinations to be scored and grades reported. UK seniors are advised to check with the Independent Study Program Office testing clerk to determine the last day a final exam may be taken to meet the University's graduation deadline.
Grade Reporting
Final grades for Independent Study courses will not be issued until all outstanding fees have been paid.
Official transcripts for University of Kentucky students are automatically forwarded to the registrar and the appropriate academic dean.
Transcripts for students at other colleges and universities will be mailed when a request is made to the Independent Study Program Office. The University of Kentucky Registrar does not have this information. There is no charge for initial transcripts. A charge of $5 per additional transcript is required.
