Advising and Assistance

The appropriate academic dean will make final decisions on student advising and enrollment. Special problems that might arise for students in completing their course work will be resolved by the Independent Study Program Office.

Student Status

Students enrolled in less than 12 hours on campus during a semester or six hours during a summer term may not use their correspondence enrollment to qualify as a full-time student.

Financial Aid

Correspondence courses may be added to on-campus part-time enrollments to qualify a student as a full-time student for some forms of financial aid. All questions regarding the use of correspondence course credits for financial aid should be addressed to the Financial Aid Office.

Issuance of Credits

Course grades, including credit hours and quality points , earned from taking correspondence courses will be posted when the course (the final exam) is completed. At that time, the grade, credit hours, and quality points will be put on the student's permanent record for the semester the course was started.

Report of Grades

The Independent Study Office will, upon completion of the course, send a transcript to the Registrar's Office, a copy of the transcript to the student's college and a copy to the student. The ISP course grade will appear on the student's semester grade report issued by the Registrar's Office, if the grade is turned in by the end of a given term. Students who do not complete a course on time or withdraw before taking the final exam receive a grade of "W" for withdrawn.

Maximum Credit Hours

UK Students may earn no more than 30 credit hours toward an undergraduate degree through the Independent Study Program.

Reinstatement

If a student is suspended from the University, he or she must be reinstated before enrolling in an Independent Study course. (Misconduct and poor scholarship are two reasons the University might unilaterally drop a student.)

Graduate Students

Independent Study courses may be taken by graduate students only to overcome undergraduate deficiencies and to fulfill requirements for teacher certification. The University of Kentucky will not accept credits earned through Independent Study for a graduate degree.

Pass-Fail Option

With the approval of their academic dean, UK students with a class standing of sophomore or higher may enroll in elective courses on a pass-fail basis. This does not apply to graduate students.

Option to Repeat

Students will have the option to repeat, once, as many as three different courses which have been completed with only the grade, credit hours and quality points for the second completion used in computing the student's academic standing and credit for graduation. A student exercising the repeat option must first secure the written approval of the Dean of the college in which the student is enrolled.

Re-enrollment

Students may re-enroll for an incompleted Independent Study course at any time, with the approval of the dean of their college, provided the current tuition and fees are paid. Only one re-enrollment per course is permitted.
